For matchday 33 of the Bundesliga, Mainz 05 welcomed Werder Bremen at the Opel Arena. After beating Dortmund last week, the 05ers were able to get another victory after beating their opponents by 3-1. Robin Quaison, Jean-Paul Boetius, and Edimilson Fernandes scored for the hosts. Yuya Osako scored for the visitors.
The first stage started with the River Islanders looking for the goal. They had some good chances during the early minutes, obligating goalkeeper Florian Muller to make some good saves in order to avoid the goal.
After a few minutes, the home club started to have more the ball and create plays. As they were a little more organized than their opponents, they were able to break the deadlock at the 25th minute. After a free-kick, Quaison appeared to put the ball into the goal, needing the help of technology to confirm that the ball crossed the line.
Being ahead on the scoring, Mainz felt a little more confident and were able to double the scoring five minutes later. After a beautiful play by Danny Latza, Boetius shot without no chances for goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, increasing his team’s advantage before the half-time.
The second half began and Bremen tried to increase the intensity, as they needed the victory at all cost. The change of attitude was worth it when, at the 58th minute, they were able to score. Japanese Osako sent a strong shot and beat goalkeeper Muller to give a little hope to his club.
However, it was not enough to avoid the defeat, as the hosts still managed to score the third goal. At the 85th minute, Edimilson Fernandes appeared to put the ball into the back of the net and guarantee the three points.
With the 3-1 victory, Mainz 05 avoided relegation, being in 13th place, with 37 points. Werder Bremen, on the other hand, are in a very difficult situation, in 17th place, with 28 points. Their only chance is fighting for a place on play-offs to avoid relegation.
