This Wednesday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan came out and spoke about the -according to him- ‘premature’ return of the Premier League. Five of the 20 English Premier League teams are from London, one of the UK’s most affected cities by the Coronavirus.

“While the country is still in crisis and hundreds of people are dying every day, Sadiq Khan estimates that it is too early to discuss the resumption of the Premier League and high-level sports in the capital,” said a spokesman of the mayor, to the newspaper Evening Standard.

However, last Monday, the British government authorized sporting events, but still with matches to be played behind closed doors and with no agglomerations on the streets in the Stadium surrounding areas.

As a football fanatic, Mayor Sadiq Khan is very keen on the return of football, and also for his childhood club to be an unprecedented champion.

“Sadiq is extremely interested in the resumption of the Premier League and professional sport in general. As a Liverpool fan, Sadiq, of course, wants the Premier League to return ”, explained the spokesman

But, he explains that this can only happen when it is totally safe to do so so that there is no overload on the London healthcare system. However, there is a protocol that allows teams to train with certain restrictions, and the Premier League may return in June. In other words, it seems that football is close to its return.

The Premier League has been on hiatus since March 13, when the peak of the pandemic started in Europe and quickly spread throughout the Old Continent.

UEFA gave domestic Leagues the liberty to decide the future of each League, and since then, there are many questions and doubts about the resumption of the English Premier League.

With all the money involving the Premier League, the “null and void” option is out of possibility, and Liverpool will certainly be crowned Champions of the League, whether it has an Asterisk, or not.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has all the right to be concerned about his city, and I’m sure the Premier League will find a way to London teams host their remaining games when it’s safe to do so.
