Only unbeaten side in the English Premier League this season, Liverpool remains strong in the lead. On Sunday, in the rerun of the last UEFA Champions League final, coach Jurgen Klopp’s team was insistent and showed reaction power at home, or as Liverpool fans say, at the fortress of Anfield Road stadium to beat Tottenham 2-1 in the clash for Matchday 10.
The win, the ninth in ten games in the competition, leaves Liverpool on 28 points, again six points clear of runner-up Manchester City, their main contender for the title, just like last season.
One of the biggest disappointments at the start of the competition, Tottenham, the current European runners-up, has not won in three matches. In free fall, the London team has 12 points and is in the second half of the table, only in 11th place.
Despite the provocative atmosphere from Liverpool as they kept chanting that they won the UCL in Madrid, it was the Spurs fans who celebrated early into the match. At the Fortress of Anfield, in front of the Kop, on 47 seconds, Heung-Min Son got the ball down the left and fired. The ball deflected off Dejan Lovren, hit the post, and rebounded off to Harry Kane, who headed in. 0-1 Spurs.
It would be a smart strategy against a normal side. However, this Liverpool team is very strong mentally, and hardly ever lose games. The Reds went on to attack and took control of the match. Tottenham’s goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was to blame for the Reds remaining goalless in the first half, as the Argentine saved a lot of balls, pulling out incredible saves.
However, not even he was ready for what was to happen in the second half.
On 52 mins, Fabinho got the ball down the middle and wonderfully picked captain Jordan Henderson inside of the area. The English skipper finished off past Gazzaniga, who could do nothing. 1-1.
What a game from Fabinho by the way. The Brazilian seemed to be everywhere on the pitch. He was massive both when it came to attacking and defending. The Brazilian defensive midfielder, who was nicknamed ‘gadget-legs’ by Liverpool players and supporters, was praised by Klopp after the match.
Liverpool kept on pressing, and the winning goal seemed to be imminent. It came in on 75 minutes. Sadio Mane was picked out inside the area and was brought down by the Spurs defender. The referee awarded the Reds the pen, which Mohamed Salah perfectly put into Gazzaniga’s corner in a low-shot. 2-1 Liverpool.
With the goal, the Egyptian striker got to 50 goals for Liverpool at Anfield in 58 games. A great milestone by Salah.
It was a good Football match at Anfield. Once again the Reds beat the Spurs in 2019. It was the 3rd game only this year, and the Reds won all of them. I see this Liverpool commanded by Klopp ready to lift the Premier League after 30 years. Surely the games against Manchester City will say if the Reds deserve to win it or not. However, being six points ahead, with 28 points out of 30 possible is such a great achievement.
Once again we need to talk about the mentality Klopp has implanted into these Liverpool players’ minds. More and more the German coach is proving to be one of the best managers of all the time.
