It was in a dramatic game, but Paris Saint-Germain is qualified for the round of 16 with two Matchdays to go. Playing at the Parc des Princes in Paris, PSG counted on a key performance from Keylor Navas, who saved a penalty, to beat Belgium’s Club Brugge 1-0. Argentine striker Mauro Icardi scored the goal of the French triumph.
With the result, PSG reached 12 points in Group A and booked their place into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid also won their match and has 7 points. Both sides will face each other on November 26 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Following a balanced start, with PSG having more possession and Brugge taking advantage of the counterattacks, the French team opened the scoring after 22 minutes as Angel Di Maria got the ball inside the box and rolled it to Icardi, who just tapped in. 0-1 PSG.
After that, PSG kept having chances but wasted then. Moreover, in the second half, Brugge got back up to make thins harder for the French and could threaten Navas. The Belgian team controlled the offensive actions, and pushed hard for an equalizer, as PSG’s hero, Navas, was forced to pull off great saves.
On 75 mins, PSG’s captain Thiago Silva brought Diagne down into the area, as the penalty was given to Club Brugge. Diagne himself got the ball and fired into the corner. However, Navas went there to deny him, giving no rebound whatsoever.
Even with the wasted penalty, the Belgians kept going, and they were exploring mainly Thiago Silva’s side, as the Brazilian defender seemed to be the weak spot of the Parisian defense this Wednesday. However, Navas and PSG held the Belgians and guaranteed the three points and the spot into the Round of 16.
