Granada is going through a dream season in the Spanish La Liga. Newly promoted side, the Andalusian team took the lead of the Spanish league on Sunday by beating Real Betis 1-0 at home on Matchday 10.
With the result, guaranteed thanks to Spanish left-back Alvaro Vadillo’s goal, Granada reaches 20 points and overtook the lead from Barcelona in the table. The Catalan team, however, has one game yet to play, which is the derby against Real Madrid.
With nine games played, Barcelona has 19 points, just one more than rivals Real Madrid, which provisionally is on the fifth place in the table. The fourth is Atletico Madrid, which also has 19, as well as Real Sociedad.
Despite having an extra match, Granada has already beaten Barcelona in this season in the League. Just over a month ago, the Andalusian team welcomed the Catalan giant and triumphed 2-0.
This Sunday, the Andalusian victim were local rivals Real Betis. In the first half, the visitors had the best opportunities through Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia, Mexican midfielder Andres Guardado and Algerian defender Aissa Mandi. However, none of them could score.
Despite the superiority in the first half, Betis did not open the scoring and who took advantage was Granada, who came back from the break up to grab the three points.
On 61 minutes, the Spanish striker Carlos Fernandez invaded the area and found Vadillo. The left-back showed opportunism, good positioning and did not miss the chance. The Spaniard struck a powerful shot to beat goalkeeper Joel Robles and sacrament the victory.
What a win and what a story this Granada side is writing so far. Who would’ve thought that after 9 games, the leaders of La Liga would be Granada… And playing good football. It’s not only a matter of luck. We’ve seen a similar story tale in England a couple of seasons ago, as Leicester led by Claudio Ranieri went on to beat the English giants and won the Premier League. It’s soon to say whether they will do it or not, but it’s possible.
