Dutchman Wesley Sneijder stated that he could have been better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but apparently, his love for wine held him back. It’s not a joke, the man himself said that, as we’ll see above:
“I could have become just like Messi or Ronaldo. I simply didn’t feel like it. Maybe I had a glass of wine for dinner. Leo and Cristiano are different, they made a lot of sacrifices, ”he said.
According to him, even with the potential to achieve such an achievement, the Dutchman does not regret his choices.
“It’s good for me because, even so, my career was incredible,” he explained.
Sneijder was a great player, and I still remember his prime football career. Let’s go back 10 years in time, back to 2010. South Africa World Cup, mainly the quarterfinals against Brazil. He, alongside Arjen Robben and Van Persie, managed to pull out an amazing second-half comeback against Brazil, who had maybe the weakest Brazilian National Team of the last three decades but still were in good positions to fight for something else.
Sneijder scored a goal and had an assist in the 2-1 win over the Brazilians. Still that year, Sneijder commanded the Dutch National Team to the World Cup Final, which they sadly lost to Andres Iniesta’s Spain in the extra-time, but at the same time, he played a major role on Internazionale’s treble, winning the UEFA Champions League, the Serie A, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He’s had his moments, but he can’t quite frankly compare himself to Messi or Ronaldo, even though I think he was just trying to be funny, or maybe he had a glass before this interview.
But joking aside, I’m sure that every Dutchman remembers him, as well as Internazionale fans.
