Napoli’s and Belgium National Team’s striker Dries Mertens has been speculated in several clubs across Europe. However, it seems that the love for the Partenopei Azzurri prevailed once again. In this way, the Belgian signed a contract with the Italians for another three seasons.
It is nothing new the fact that Mertens has been standing out on the football world. Without a doubt, since he arrived at Napoli in 2013 he has become one of the club’s main strikers. Because of that, it was just obvious that the 33-year-old player starts to have many clubs interested in him.
However, this season, once Merten’s contract would expire on June 30, the harassment became greater because without a contract he would be free to sign with any other club he wanted. Big clubs sent proposals and talked to the Belgian, among them the ones who made the most progress in negotiations where probably Inter Milan and Chelsea.
However, according to the newspaper ‘Sky Sports’, Mertens and Napoli have already signed a new contract, this one until 2022. The decision was taken after the ultimatum by Aurelio De Laurentiis, president of the Neapolitan club.
With that, the athlete ends with the plans of the teams interested in him, just like Chelsea. The English team probably was the one that wanted him more than the other. In April Frank Lampard admitted to almost daily contact with Mertens to try to convince him. However, it seems that Mertens will keep under Gattuso’s command.
Which is not bad at all. Dries Mertens has won over Neapolitan fans over the year and, since he arrived in 2013, he has bee a part of their history. With that, the fans really wanted him to continue playing for the Partenopei Azurri.
Maybe, with a little more time, Mertens may become one of the greatest idols of Napoli. And that would be amazing.
