In the only game this Sunday for the 32nd matchday of the Premier League, Southampton beat Watford at Vicarage Road by 3-1. Southampton’s top scorer, Danny Ings grabbed a brace and became Premier League’s top scorer, with a goal ahead of Leicester’s Jamie Vardy. The home defeat leaves Watford in a difficult situation, since, if West Ham and Bournemouth get good results, the Hornets can end the matchday up in the relegation zone.
Watford did not impose themselves in the first half and got completely dominated by visitors Saints during the first 45 mins. Ings broke the deadlock on 16 on the clock through a long-range finish at the corner. Out of reach for the Hornets keeper.
Both Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond had chances to increase Southampton’s lead, but they wasted them, as the first-half ended up 1-0.
Watford came back to the second half as the brighter side, but goalkeeper Foster broke their tempo. The Watford goalkeeper tried a pass, but he ended up assisting Ings, who doubled the scoring for the visitors and also became Premier League’s top scorer.
Watford counted on a Bednarek own goal to diminish the gap, but a few minutes later, Ward-Prowse brilliantly curled a free-kick home and gave final numbers to the match.
With the victory away from home, Southampton reached 40 points and provisionally took the 13th place, since Newcastle still play in the matchweek and can overcome the Saints. The southern England team’s next clash will be against Manchester City at home. On the other hand, the Hornets will go to London to face Chelsea and desperately need a win to boost their hopes against the Premier League relegation.
