This Saturday at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium Sevilla hosted Atletico Madrid in Matchday 12 in La Liga. Franco Vazquez and Alvaro Morata scored in the 1-1 draw in Seville. The result tasted bitter for both teams as a win would put one of them on top of La Liga as Barcelona were beaten 3-1 by Levante earlier in the day. However, with the draw, Sevilla is 4th with 21 points, while Atletico Madrid is 3rd also with 21 points but with more wins than Sevilla.
Diego Simeone made changes to the team that drew with Alaves last Tuesday. Diego Costa was benched as Angel Correa was given yet another chance.
However, Correa did not improve Atleti that much, as the game looked to be very balanced at the early stages. The hosts opened the scoring on 29 minutes, as Franco Vazquez received a good cross from Banega and nodded home past Jan Oblak. 1-0 Sevilla.
1-0 down as visitors, Simeone had no choice other than going with Costa in the second half. The Spaniard was introduced for Thomas Lemar, and changed the game, as Atletico got more aggressive on the pitch. He even equalized the game, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Even so, Atletico got to the equalizer moments later, as a cross from Arias found Morata, who scored for the Colchoneros. 1-1.
Diego Costa had the chance of being Atletico’s hero as Diego Carlos fouled Koke inside the box and the referee awarded Atleti a pen. The Spaniard was the taker, but his weak finish at the corner made things easy for Vacklic, who denied him.
At the end of the match, another frustrating draw for Atletico Madrid, who lost their chances to go top of the league.
Now both sides are committed to European competitions midweek. On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid travels to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League. The next day, in the UEFA Europa League, Sevilla faces Dudelange of Luxembourg.
