In order to replace Thibaut Courtois, who left Chelsea at the end of the transfer market in 2018, the Blues had to run for a new goalkeeper. In August, they signed Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga, who used to play for Athletic Bilbao.
As it was a last-minute signing, the English club had to pay 80 million euros, which made the 23-year-old Spaniard the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.
Because of that, there was a lot of pressure on Kepa during his first season at the Stamford Bridge. It did not affect the athlete’s performance at the time and the goalkeeper did well, helping his new team to win the UEFA Europa League.
However, in the current season, already with Frank Lampard as Chelsea’s manager, the keeper was very inconsistent and failed in crucial matches. With that, it was a matter of time until the club became unsatisfied with him. Kepa then saw the 38-year-old Willy Caballero take his place in the team.
Now, it is said that Lampard has already asked for a new goalkeeper. So, what appeared to be a long-term investment when Kepa arrived, won’t probably last even 3 years.
Leaving England, Kepa may return to Spain, as Valencia has an interest in the player because Jasper Cillessen may not stay at the club. On the other hand, Chelsea is already looking for possible players to replace the Spaniard. They see a good option with Ajax’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana. The Cameronian also seems to like the idea of going to London.
One thing that may help his decision of going is the fact that Chelsea has already officialized the signing of Morrocan Hakim Ziyech, also from the Dutch club.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper has said that, even though he was very happy at Ajax, he thinks it is already time for the next step. Onana sees Stamford Bridge as a great opportunity and is interested in joining the club in London.
