Seeking to maintain their squad, Chelsea announced this Wednesday the signing of a new contract with Olivier Giroud and Willy Caballero, until the end of next season.
Both players had contracts until June with the Blues from London. However, due to the pandemic of the new Coronavirus and the uncertainty of the date of the championship’s return, the blues decided to keep their bond with the players for another season.
The Premier League is expected to come back in June, so the calendar may be longer than normal. With that, the time of permanence of the players would decrease.
Giroud and Caballero, for example, are not in the plans for Chelsea’s distant future, however, the blues still hoped to count on the athletes until the end of next season. In this case, it was necessary for a new contract with them.
With Lampard, Chelsea focused on choosing players from their under teams to play for the main squad. During most games at the Stamford Bridge, Giroud and Caballero were sitting on the bench while Tommy Abraham and Kepa were inside the field. This disappointed the older players.
During Lampard’s command, the French striker played 13 matches, in which he just scored three goals. The Argentine goalkeeper had even worse participation. In the nine matches that he participated in, he conceded a total of 14 goals.
The London team has increasingly tried to strengthen its squad. The new contract signed with Giroud and Caballero is proof of that. Also, recently, Chelsea hired midfielder Ziyech, who was playing for Ajax, to improve their squad.
In addition, the blues have managed to maintain a good part of their main squad during this season, which for Lampard is important. However, the fans of the club do not expect this squad to bring titles, for now. But, in the future, probably yes.
