This Thursday, Real Madrid became La Liga Champions for the 34th time in their rich history! Following a 2-1 win over Villarreal, Zinedine Zidane’s men sealed the title of the Spanish League 2019/20 season. Karim Benzema scored both goals for Los Blancos, as Iborra grabbed the consolation for the Yellow Submarine.

Surely that Real Madrid deserves all the credit for winning the League, but VAR played an enormous role in that as well. They could win nine games in a row since the league restart, but these wins came through a struggling football, counting on center-backs winners, an inspired Karim Benzema and, at least, four controversial penalties that were awarded thanks to the VAR.

It’s not a direct critic towards Real Madrid, but this La Liga’s season came disguised in a frustrating way for many people, as it proved to be maybe weaker than the French Ligue 1.

Maybe expectations were too high about it, but both Real Madrid and Barcelona weren’t convincing enough. The title went for the best team at the end of the day, though.

The first half of the Villarreal game was very even, but Real Madrid managed to go half-time with a goal-lead. It was Benzema who broke the deadlock on 23 minutes, as Casemiro intercepted a pass in midfield, played for Modric, who laid it off for Benzema in the six-yard-box. The Frenchman scored in a close-range finish through the legs of the keeper.

After the break, there was the already traditional VAR controversy in Real Madrid games. Once again, the play involved the team’s captain, Sergio Ramos, as he was brought down inside the box by a Yellow Submarine player.

The VAR checked the play and awarded Los Blancos the pen.

It was curious how it was taken though. Captain Ramos was the taker, but instead of shooting, he passed it to Benzema, who scored. However, the Frenchman was already inside the box when the first touch happened, then the referee gave Madrid a second chance to take it.

This time, Benzema himself took the responsibility, and scored, opening a two-goal lead for Real Madrid.

A few minutes later, Vicente Iborra scored for the Submariners, in a classy header past Courtois.

Zidane’s men even got to the third on 90+5, after a classy solo-play by Vinicius Junior, but Asensio’s goal was ruled out for handball.

Congratulations to La Liga champions Real Madrid!
