Gassed up by two good wins in both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea got back to the pitch on Sunday to face Southampton away from home. On Matchday 8 in the Premier League, Frank Lampard’s side played a good match at the Saint Mary’s Stadium and defeated their opponents 4-1. Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Ngolo Kante and Mitchy Batshuayi scored for the Blues while Danny Ings cashed for the Saints.
Even playing away from home, it was Chelsea who opened the scoring after 17 minutes. Tammy Abraham was picked out in the attack and lifted it over the goalkeeper to make the first of the Blues. The ball stayed just over the line, and the goal-line technology helped the Blues on this one. 0-1 Chelsea.
Seven mins later, Lampard’s team scored again, this time through Mason Mount. Willian received it at the edge of the area and rolled to the wonderboy, who put it past the goalkeeper Angus Gunn to double the visitors’ lead. 0-2.
Despite Chelsea’s dominance, Southampton managed to reduce the gap with 30 minutes into the first half. Valery made a beautiful play down the right flank and crossed it to Ings, who tapped in past Kepa. However, the reaction of the Saints stopped there. At 40 minutes, Kante scored the third for the Blues in a shot from outside the area, which still took a deflection midway, tricking the goalkeeper. 1-3.
The last 45 minutes also had some scoring opportunities for both teams, but it was Chelsea who scored one more and wrapped the game up. With 89 on the clock, substitute Christian Pulisic played with Batshuayi who finished through the legs of Gunn and scored the fourth for the Blues. 1-4 Chelsea.
With the good away win, Chelsea, moved up to the fifth position on the table with 14 points, while Southampton is only 16th with seven points.
