This Saturday, Atletico Madrid welcomed Real Betis for matchday 36 of La Liga. At the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, the hosts had two goals ruled out by VAR but ended up with the three points after a 1-0 victory. The only goal of the match was scored by Diego Costa.

Both teams started the match without some important players. While Atleti couldn’t count on Joao Felix and Gimenez but injured, Betis were without a manager after Rubi was fired. Even without one of their starts, the hosts didn’t show problems in controlling the match during the first half. Already in the early minutes, they began to create chances and put a lot of pressure on their opponents.

After a while, Atleti almost broke the deadlock with Angel Correa, who even put the ball into the back of the net. However, the goal was ruled out after VAR saw a handball from Marcos Llorente in the middle of the play.

Even with the early pressure, and the almost goal, the visitors didn’t feel scared and were also able to create some good chances. They almost opened the scoring with Andres Guardado, but the ball went wide.

At the 34th minute, Atletico once again found the back of the net. This time, after a beautiful play from Alvaro Morata. But, once again, VAR checked the play and ruled out the goal, because of an offside position of a few centimeters. With that, both teams were to the locker room goalless.

The second half started with the visitors being able to avoid the total control from the hosts. They closed the defense and weren’t giving as much space for Atleti to create plays, as well as attacking and threatening goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s goal.

Seeing his team completely blocked, manager Diego Simeone made a few chances. It wasn’t effective right after it, especially when the Colchoneros saw themselves with only 10 players after Mario Hermoso saw a red card. With one less player, the hosts seemed lost in the pitch.

However, the visitors didn’t really take advantage of that moment and were punished at the 74th minute, when Atletico broke the deadlock. After Yannick Carrasco’s free-kick, Diego Costa was able to head the ball into the back of the net and guarantee the three points with the simple 1-0 win.

With the victory, Atletico Madrid reached 66 points and remain in 3rd place. Meanwhile, Real Betis stopped at 41 points, in 13th place.
