On Eden Hazard’s return to the pitch, Real Madrid drew by 2-2 with Celta de Vigo, on matchday 24 of the Spanish Championship. Toni Kroos and Sergio Ramos scored the goals of the hosts, while Fyodor Smolov and Santi Mina scored the ones for the visitors.
Playing at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Merengues were surprised already at the beginning of the match. At the 7th minute, Iago Aspas assisted Smolov, who controlled the ball and hit in the left corner of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
One goal ahead, the Celts closed their defense and, even though Real Madrid searched incessantly for an equalizer, they managed to hold the result until the half-time.
In the second half, the home side found their way to the goal. At the 52nd minute, Kroos received a great cross from Marcelo at the edge of the box and put the ball into the back of the net to let things equal once again.
At the 65th, they got the comeback when the referee awarded them a penalty when goalkeeper Blanco brought Hazard down inside the box. Defender and captain Ramos stepped up and converted from the spot.
When it looked like the Merengues’ victory was guaranteed, the visitors equalized the scoring again. Denis Suarez found a beautiful pass to Santi Mina from the right and the striker, who had just come into the game scored from close-range.
With the 2-2 result, Real Madrid reached 53 points and remained at the top of the table. However, the difference of points to Barcelona dropped to just one point. Celta, on the other hand, remains in 17th place, with 21 points, fighting against relegation.
Real Madrid returns to the pitch next Saturday when they face Levante away from home. Let’s see how Zidane will play on the weekend, knowing that on Wednesday they welcome Manchester City in the UCL. Celta, also on Saturday, welcome Leganes.
