According to the newspaper “The Sun”, manager Mikel Arteta is pretty satisfied with David Luiz’s performance at Arsenal and this may give the Brazilian a chance to extend his contract. As it is common in European clubs, the new defender’s bond would last for another year with the Gunners.
David Luiz is in the club since August 2019, after arriving for 8.70 million euros from Chelsea. Of course, this created many debates in London, once Arsenal and Chelsea are rivals. The Blues’ fans, who liked the Brazilian a lot, considered it a huge betrayal. However, it was his decision to make and he chose the red side of London.
With the Gunners, he already played 32 matches and scored 2 goals. During this time, there were 11 victories, 14 draws, and 7 losses. It could be better but it’s not that bad either.
Luiz already played for Benfica, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, giving the 32-year-old defender a very positive career in Europe. He is also part of the Brazilian National Team since 2010, for which he played 57 matches and scored 3 goals. One of his worst moments with his country’s jersey was certainly the World Cup 2014, in Brazil, where he was the captain in that humiliating, yet historic 7-1 defeat against Germany.
Even with that, he still is considered a good defender and also a leader. His contract with Arsenal goes until June 2021. He is already 32 years old and some Brazilian clubs are already trying to bring him back to his home country, as Palmeiras tried last year. If the extension really happens, it would probably confirm the stay of the Brazilian for at least two more seasons in European football.
Apart from the ups and downs, he continues standing out in Arsenal’s team and, in my opinion, he may be of great importance to the Gunners. As I said, he is a leader. Even if he makes some bad choices on the defense some times, he is there to give incentive to his teammates. Arsenal needs somebody like that.
