Eusebio Di Francesco is no longer Roma’s manager. Less than a year after the historic campaign in the Champions League, in which under him, Roma eliminated the powerful Barcelona in a historic performance at the Stadio Olimpico, and got to the semi-finals of the European competition, ending up being defeated to Liverpool. After playing cowardly against Porto and end up knocked out of the UEFA Champions League’s Round of 16, the Italian coach resigned on this Thursday. The team did not have good results in the season and haven’t been playing well under him. English champion with Leicester, the Italian manager Claudio Ranieri is the favorite to replace him.
An Italian champion with the Giallorossi in 2001, Di Francesco returned to the club in 2017 to take the manager role. In the first season, taking the club to the Champions League semifinals, something that had only happened once (in 1984), after beating Barcelona 3-0 (thanks to the goal scored in the first leg in the defeat by 4-1 in Barcelona).
– In my name and everyone in Rome, I would like to thank Eusebio for his work and commitment. Since returning to the club, he has always acted professionally and put the needs of the club ahead of his own. We wish him all the best for the future – said the president of Rome, Jim Pallotta.
This season, however, the team does not have a good season. In addition to the early elimination in the Champions League, Roma is the fifth place in the table, which does not even guarantee UEFA Champions League football for the next season. In addition to it, Roma was absolutely trashed in the Italian Cup, and in an attempt to copy Brazil’s awesome performance ahead of Germany in a World Cup semi-final, lost to Fiorentina by the symbolic scoring of 7-1.
However, we have to reckon what Di Francesco has done for Roma. I wish him a great future ahead of another great side in Europe!
