Isolated leaders of the Italian Serie A, Juventus lost 2-1 to Napoli this Sunday, away from home, and wasted the chance to distance themselves from Internazionale in the 21st matchday of the domestic tournament.
With the adverse result, the Turin team has 51 points, three ahead of the rivals from Milan, who also stumbled on Sunday as they drew 1-1 at home with Cagliari.
Napoli, on the other hand, reaches 27 points and moves up to 12th place, four points from sixth place AC Milan, the first team in the qualifying zone to the UEFA Europa League.
The result is important for coach Gennaro Gattuso’s men, who are looking to react after a bad start of the season under Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti – who went to manage Everton -.
Despite the irregularity in the League, Napoli was superior in this Sunday’s match and knew how to capitalize on the home-court advantage to control the match at the San Paolo Stadium.
Even with the proposal to stay less in possession of the ball, the Neapolitan team had a greater number of shots and were the most dangerous side by far.
The two goals of the home win came in the second half. On 63 minutes, Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski opened the scoring. The Neapolitans doubled their lead on 86′, through Italian striker Lorenzo Insigne, who counted on a deflection to score. 0-2 Napoli.
Juventus tried a reaction in the 90th minute. Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo decided to show up and discounted for the Old Lady, in a shot on the exit of the Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret. 1-2 Napoli.
Good. But not enough for Juventus.
The victory, however, means much more than only the three points for Gattuso’s men. It means maybe a turning point in the Naples side, following a terrible momentum in the season.
