At age 31, Cavani already thinks about retirement – and it may not be long in coming. In an interview with the French newspaper “Le Parisien”, the striker said he could end his career as the current contract with PSG ends after the 2019/2020 season.
Cavani brought up the idea of retiring when asked about the possibility of renewing with Paris Saint-Germain. The Uruguayan said there was no negotiation going on and that he would be okay with any decision the club would take.
“For now, we have not talked about the contract yet. There is no discussion about an extension. If the club wants to talk to me about it, fine. And if they prefer to say ‘thank you very much for everything and goodbye,’ it will not be a problem either. It is life. At this moment, my contract will be over, and maybe my career. I do not know if I will continue to play after 2020,” said the player.
While not reaching a decision on extending the contract with PSG or retirement, Cavani remains as a major player in the Parisian cast. Close to Neymar and Mbappé, he is one of those who enjoys more prestige next to the fans. And he takes advantage to emphasize the connection with the comrades of attack:
“Over time, we found a good balance between the attackers, I, Kylian (Mbappé) and Ney we understand each other better and better. We were able to connect much better with each other,” Cavani said.
The PSG and its powerful attack trio have a very quiet life in the French Championship. The Paris team is leading the competition with 13 points and two games away from the vice-leader, Lille.
The biggest goal of PSG in the season, however, is the title of the Champions League of Europe. The team is qualified for the round of 16 and will face Manchester United. The 2018/2019 tournament will be another opportunity for Cavani to achieve one of the goals he still pursues in his career.
“I miss having a goal in the Champions League final,” revealed the Uruguayan.
