Brave Monaco traveled to the Parc des Princes and surely made a lot of their fans proud! The team broke Paris Saint-Germain’s six-game winning streak in the French Ligue 1 with a 3-3 draw at the Parisian home for the 20th Matchweek of the tournament.
The highlight of the match was Neymar though. The Brazilian star scored two goals and also played a major role in the other goal of Paris Saint-Germain, which was an own goal. All this in the first half, which ended 3-2 for the hosts.
The unexpected stumble, however, did not shake Paris Saint-Germain’s dominance in French. The capital team reached 46 points, five more than second-placed Olympique Marseille.
It’s also good to note that PSG has a game yet to be played. Monaco is in eighth place with 29, four less than third-placed Rennes. The top three qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The first half was played at a frenetic pace at the Parc des Princes. The visitors were already 2-1 up after 12 minutes. Neymar opened the scoring after receiving a Verratti pass, but the response was quick and forceful: Portuguese Gelson Martins equalized and Ben Yedder scored the turnaround.
At 23 minutes, Paris Saint-Germain counted on the luck to equalize. Neymar received the ball into the Monaco area and tried to pass it to a teammate. Halfway through, the ball met Ballo Toure’s foot and went straight to the bottom of the nets. 2-2 with an unfortunate own goal from Toure.
The Ligue 1 leaders went on to turn the game around in the first half and succeeded. Mbappe was knocked down in the Monaco area on 39 minutes and the referee awarded the penalty. Neymar was the taker and put Paris Saint-Germain ahead in the lead.
In the second half, at 70 minutes, Monaco equalized it through a controversial goal. Algerian striker Slimani was in a clear offside position when he received the ball and scored after a challenge with goalkeeper Keylor Navas. However, defender Marquinhos deflected the pass before it reached to the Algerian. After a long dialogue between the referee and the VAR officials, the goal stayed.
Frenchman Mbappe could still be the Parisian hero after receiving a good pass from Neymar, but his finish was poor.
A good game overall. Neymar seems to be recovering the good Football, as there are still Champions League hopes for Monaco.
