Mirandes, from Spain’s second division, continue to live their dream season in the Copa del Rey. This Wednesday, the team from the small town of Miranda de Ebro made another victim: they beat Villarreal 4-2 and qualified for the semifinal of the competition, repeating their best result so far when they also got in the semifinals back in the 2011-12 season.
The Yellow Submarine, the seventh place in La Liga, was the third elite team eliminated by Mirandes at the Anduva Municipal Stadium in this King’s Cup, following the fate of Sevilla, in the round of 16, and Celta de Vigo, in the round of 32.
More than 4 thousand fans went to the Municipal of Anduva to watch another historic triumph. They started celebrating early in the match, with the goal from Brazilian Matheus Barrozo at the 17th minute, breaking the deadlock.
Villarreal was able to equalize the scoring still in the first half, with Javi Ontiveros at the 32nd minute. However, before half-time, at 45+3, the home side was awarded a penalty, in which Martin Merquelanz stepped up and scored to put the hosts ahead on the scoring for the second half.
In the last 45 minutes, veteran Santi Cazorla, a two-time European champion with Spain, equalized things once again in the first minutes, also with a penalty kick.
But Mirandes was not intimidated with the equalizer and took only 2 minutes to get ahead on the scoring once again. Odeio Onaindia received a cross from Merquelanz and sent a left-footed shot from very close range into the back of the net and past goalkeeper Andres Fernandez
In the injury time, at 90+2, the home side still had time and power to score their fourth goal of the night, with Antonio Sanchez, closing the scoring at 4-2 and starting the party with their fans.
Mirandes will now wait for the last two games of the Copa del Rey to see who they will face on the semifinals. Will they be able to get their best result ever and reach the finals? Honestly, I hope they can do it.
