The Dutch National Team is well-known for their solid and consistent defense formed by Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt. However, in the match against Germany this Friday in Hamburg, Holland had to count on the attack to come back from 1-0 down to 4-2 up and keep alive the dream of featuring into the Euro next year. Frenkie de Jong, Jonathan Tah – Own Goal -, Donnyel, and Gini Wijnaldum scored for the Dutch, as Serge Gnabry, and Toni Kroos did for Germany.

It was indeed a huge win for the Dutchman in the Group C of the Euro 2020 Qualifiers. With the result, the Dutch reached six points in three games and are the 3rd in the Group, while the Germans have nine points in four games, sitting at 2nd. Surprisingly, Northern Ireland top the group with 12 points.

It was a busy match from minute one, with the hosts being the brightest side and opening the scoring with nine minutes. The Dutch defense failed to mark Gnabry, as the Bayern winger was picked out unmarked down the right. Jasper Cillessen dropped a relatively easy ball, as it rebounded back to Gnabry, who put the Germans ahead in Hamburg. 1-0.

Both teams had chances to score in the first half, but the best was saved for the end.

After the break, the Dutch Lions came back to the pitch up to turn things around. A defeat to Germany could mean the end of the Dutch dream, and they dominated the Germans in the second half. At 59, Tah failed, as Barcelona’s De Jong received a good pass to stay face to face against Manuel Neuer, and level for the visitors. 1-1.

Seven minutes before, Tah was the negative highlight for Germany once again. After a corner from the left, van Dijk headed to Neuer’s great save. However, in the rebound, Tah’s miserable attempt to clear a low-cross ended up in an own goal. 1-2 Holland.

The Germans got to the equalizer on 73, in an absurd penalty given due to the ball touching De Ligt’s hand inside the area. It was absurd cause it was a slight touch, and 100% unintentional. It’s worth to remember that there is no VAR in the Euro 2020 Qualifiers. Toni Kroos didn’t have anything to do with that and sent Cillesen to the wrong side to level for the Germans. 2-2.

From then on Germany got the ball more, but missed a lot and were punished through the lethal Dutch counterattack. At 79, Ginter’s poor pass was intercepted by Memphis Depay, as the Dutchman played with Donyell, who scored. 2-3 Holland.

Germany threw themselves at Holland looking for the equalizer but gave literally their whole defensive half to the Netherlands, who wrapped the game up minutes from the end, as Depay was once again the provider, assisting Wijnaldum, who scored from close-range. 2-4 Holland.

Huge win for Holland. Both National Teams are back in action next Monday, as Holland take on Estonia, and Germany visits the Group C leaders, Northern Ireland.
