River Plate champions? Not if it’s in Boca Juniors’ hands. At least not this weekend. Boca thrashed Colon 4-0 and postponed the definition of the Argentine Superliga title to the last matchday. All the goals were scored in the second half. Fernandez, Eduardo Salvio, Carlos Tevez, and Ramon Abila respectively scored for the visitors.
With the 4-0 win, Boca equaled River in points at the top of the table, with 45 points. Thus, they transferred the pressure to the arch-rival, who, this Saturday, will face Defensa y Justicia, at Monumental de Nunez.
There was no other way. With two games to go, it was a do or die situation for Boca Juniors. This had some negative impact on the mode Boca players behaved at the pitch, as they seemed visibly nervous, especially before the opening goal.
Colon fought as much as they could to stop Boca’s offensive sector, and they basically went full Jose Mourinho and parked the bus in the back, making things harder for the visitors.
Boca’s manager, Russo, went on and advanced their lines after the break, and Boca opened the scoring through Pol Fernandez, at the beginning of the second half.
With the deadlock broken, Colon tried to attack and left spaces in the back. Boca capitalized on that and killed the game in the counter-attacks. Salvio scored on 73, Tevez did it two mins later, as Abila wrapped it up on 85.
With all to be played for in the last matchday at La Bombonera, Boca Juniors will meet one of the greatest legends in their history: Diego Armando Maradona. Next Sunday, the Xeneize will receive Maradona’s Gimnasia y Esgrima.
Before that, however, on Tuesday, the team will face Caracas, at the opening game of the Copa Libertadores.
