This Thursday Benfica welcomed Tondela at Estadio da Luz for matchday 25 of Liga NOS. The match was surrounded by high expectations, once the hosts could recover the top of the League, due to Porto’s defeat. However, even though the Lisbon club tried, the game ended with a goalless draw.
The Eagles entered the field searching for the three points and that was very clear at the beginning of the first half. They had a great chance with Rafa Silva in the early minutes. The number 27 received a good pass from Carlos Vinicius and shot to the goal, obligating goalkeeper Claudio Ramos to make a great save with his feet.
The hosts put pressure throughout the first 45 minutes, but the aim was not good. Jardel had the chance to score in a header, but the ball went wide. In the last minutes, Carlos Vinicius had a chance in the 6-yard box, but he was already without a good angle and missed the goal.
Benfica returned to the second half basically the same way they started the first. They almost broke the deadlock and with Rafa Silva once again, but his shot went over the bar.
Obviously, the Eagles had more chances, once they were creating a lot. If it wasn’t for goalkeeper Claudio and the bad aiming of the strikers, the hosts would probably have scored. Tondela, on the other hand, had trouble attacking. In one of the rare offensive moments, the visitors almost scored. Richard made a good play and his shot hit the bar.
At the end of the match, the home team kept on putting pressure, but the goal just didn’t come. With that, the match ended in a 0-0 draw, for the fans’ disappointment.
Even without the victory, Benfica were able to get the first place in the table, with the same 60 points as Porto but with a better Goal Difference. While Tondela is in 12th place with 26 points.
