Well, no one would have predicted that the powerful Bayern Munich, the German trophy-machine would have a hard time against modest AEK Athens. Okay, I might have underestimated them, and not only them but the Greek Football teams as a whole. I won’t commit that mistake again.
Croatian manager Niko Kovac has two names to be grateful for: Javi Martinez and Robert Lewandowski. Thanks to these two, he was given a sort of a “mini-revival” ahead of the Bavarian team.
The Greek side played fiercely. And surprised maybe even the most optimistic AEK supporter as they held on until the 62nd minute without conceding against the German giants. The funniest fact is that they were being superiors than Bayern a few minutes before.
The Dutch Arjen Robben was the architect of the opening goal. He got the ball and fired, however, the ball deflected off in some Greek players and ended up to Martinez in conditions to break the deadlock, as he did. Bayern 1-0.
The Greek supporters kept on chanting, but the first goal seemed to have affected AEK a little bit as they fell for a second only two minutes later.
Serge Gnabry passed it to Rafinha, who set up the Polish striker to just tap in, beating the goalkeeper in a wise finish.
Is it enough for Bayern supporters to give some more time for Niko Kovac? Maybe. However, for a team that represents what Bayern do, a suffered victory over a side that is 10 times worse than they are, is not enough. There shouldn’t be a soul celebrating this victory, as it only showed Bayern flaws, mainly on the offensive – or inoffensive – section.
