Arsenal welcomed Watford for the final day of the Premier League season. At the Emirates Stadium, the match started very busily, with four goals during the first half. The hosts showed all their offensive firepower already at the beginning of the game and, even though the visitors fought hard to leave with at least a point, the home team got a 3-2 win. Two goals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and one of Kieran Tierney guaranteed the Gunners victory. Troy Deeney and Danny Welbeck diminished for the away team.
The hosts were trying to break the deadlock since the beginning of the first half and already at the 5th minute, they found the perfect opportunity to do so. After Craig Dawson’s foul inside the box, the referee awarded Arsenal with a penalty. Aubameyang was the one to step up and convert from the spot to open the scoring.
They kept putting pressure and at the 24th minute, they doubled their lead. Tierney controlled the ball and sent a left-footed shot into the back of the goal. Almost 10 minutes later, Aubameyang hit an overhead, scoring a stunner and giving the Gunners a 3-0 lead.
Before half-time, Watford were able to get a lifeline when David Luiz brought Danny Welbeck down inside the box. Deeney stepped up to take the penalty and converted from the spot. 3-1 on the scoring as the teams went to the locker room.
With the late goal, the Hornets came back to the second half with a little hope and threw themselves onto the hosts. At the 66th minute, they were able to find their second goal, with Welbeck. The number 10 sent a left-footed shot from 6 yards out to keep his team’s dream of playing the Premier League next season.
However, after that, they didn’t really have any other clear chance of scoring, with the Gunners obligating goalkeeper Ben Foster to make good saves to avoid another goal. So, the match ended with a 3-2 victory to the hosts.
With the result, Arsenal finished the season in 8th place, with 56 points. On the other hand, Watford lost his chance of surpassing Aston Villa and finished in 19th place, with 34 points, being relegated to the Championship.
