For matchday 26 of the Spanish League, Atletico Madrid face Espanyol away from home this Sunday. In a technically not-so-good match, the two teams shared points in a 1-1 draw. Stefan Savic’s own goal gave the lead to the home side, while Saul Ñiguez equalized for the visitors.
The match started with the hosts seeking to leave the field with a positive result, once they are trying to escape the relegation zone. And all the pressure worked because, after 24 minutes of the game, Espanyol opened the scoring. After Wu Lei’s cross from the right, the ball was left to defender Savic, who fumbled and sent it inside his own goal.
The equalizer of the Colchoneros came at the beginning of the second half, right in the first minute. Saul took advantage of a rebound from outside the box after a free-kick and scored an outstanding goal. 1-1.
With everything equal on the scoring, we expected that maybe Atleti would start getting more aggressive, but that didn’t happen. With time, the two sides reduced the tempo of the game and weren’t able to create many chances to get away with the 3 points.
With the draw, Diego Simeone’s men remain in 5th place with 44 points. The Colchoneros’ fight this season is for a place in next year’s Champions League, and they are just one point away from the 4th place. The Catalan team, on the other hand, remains in the last place, with only 20 points in 26 matches. It is still possible for them to avoid relegation, but very difficult. They are 5 points away from the first team outside the relegation zone.
Both sides come back to the pitch on the weekend, for the next matchday of La Liga. Atletico Madrid will welcome Sevilla, on Saturday, while Espanyol will visit Osasuna, on Sunday.
