In the second leg of Europa League’s round of 32, Ajax beat Getafe at home. However, the 2-1 win was not enough for the Dutch to qualify for the round of 16. The Blues opened the scoring with Jaime Mata. Danilo equalized things for the hosts and an own goal from Mathias Oliveira guaranteed the victory.
All the Sons of the Gods would not like at the beginning of the game was to concede a goal. And that was exactly what happened. At the 5th minute, the visitors broke the deadlock with Jaime Mata. That meant that Ajax not only had to win, but to score two or more goals of difference to qualify.
For their happiness, it didn’t take long to grab the equalizer. 5 minutes later, Danilo received a pass from Donny van de Beek and put the ball into the back of the net. It was still possible.
The rest of the first half was basically like the first leg match. Erik Ten Hag’s men had the ball, but the Blues arrived more often in the attack. But the scoring didn’t change until after half-time.
With the necessity to score 2 more goals – due to the away goal rule- Ajax started pushing forward and with 63 minutes on the clock, they got the comeback with an own goal from Oliveira. They had basically 30 minutes to score another one and get the qualification, but it didn’t happen. Jose Bordalas closed his team and it got even more difficult for the hosts to create offensive plays.
With that, Ajax suffered their second elimination of the year in European Competitions, both at home. Now, the Sons of the Gods will only play the national competitions and their next match is an important one, against AZ for Eredivisie. At least they still can win the Dutch league.
Getafe, on the other hand, qualified for the Round of 16 and will wait for the draw to know their next rival. Before that, the Blues face Mallorca, away from home, for La Liga.
