Ajax has distanced itself from AZ on Sunday in the race for the title in the Eredivisie. The Sons of the Gods easily won 3-0 at home against RKC Waalwijk.
With Hakim Ziyech back among the starters, Ajax did not start convincingly against RKC, but in the thirteenth minute, it already came to 1-0. They were awarded a penalty, after a foul on Donny van de Beek, Dusan Tadic stepped up and slotted the ball into the top corner.
Ajax immediately went on the hunt for the 2-0 but was always sloppy in the final third, so there were not too many great opportunities created. Just two with Ziyech, who shot straight at goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen, and Traore, which was the closest one from doubling the scoring.
RKC could, therefore, continued to hope for a stunt and got a huge opportunity at the end of the first half. Sylla Sow rounded Lisandro Martinez but then failed to finish past keeper Andre Onana.
With Daley Blind replacing Ziyech, Ajax started sharply in the second half and made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Traore put the ball into the back of the net after an assist from Van de Beek.
Ajax took it a bit slower after that but sealed the final score at 3-0 in the final phase. Substitute Huntelaar cashed in a low cross from Nicolas Tagliafico and scored his 400th goal in professional football.
With the win, the team from Amsterdam increased the lead, being now 6 points ahead of the second place, AZ, who surprisingly lost 2-0 on Saturday to the struggling FC Twente. RKC seems to be heading for direct relegation. The Waalwijkers have no less than ten points behind the number sixteen PEC Zwolle, which lost at home later in the day with 3-4 to Feyenoord.
The team of manager Erik Ten Hag can therefore confidently travel to Spain for the match against Getafe in the round of 32 of the Europa League on Thursday.
