This Wednesday, SPAL welcomed AC Milan for matchday 29 of the Serie A TIM. At the Paolo Mazza Stadium, in Ferrara, both teams shared points after a 2-2 draw. Mattia Valoti and Sergio Floccari scored for the hosts, while Rafael Leao and Francesco Vicari, with an own goal, scored for the visitors.
Due to their technical difference, many thought that the Rossoneri wouldn’t have problems against SPAL. However, that’s not really what happened. Already at the 13th minute, the hosts broke the deadlock, surprising basically everyone. After a corner kick, there was confusion inside the box and the ball was left to Valoti, who was able to put it into the back of the net.
Even though they were ahead on the scoring, SPAL didn’t actually dominate the match. The visitors were the ones to have the ball and create more, obligating goalkeeper Karlo Letica to make some good saves. However, they were not able to find the equalizer.
Then, at the 30th minute, the chance to score came to the hosts once again. This time, Floccari tried from outside the box and chipped goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma over. A beautiful goal from SPAL’s captain.
Things would get a little bad for the hosts still in the first half once, at the 43rd minute, Marco D’Alessandro saw a red card and was sent off. They had a 2-0 lead but would have to play the entire second half with 10 players.
Milan took some time to actually be able to score. They tried since the first minute of the second half and had some good chances, especially with Lucas Paqueta, who was maybe the best player for the Rossoneri, but stopped or at the goalkeeper’s save or at the defense.
The first goal came only at the 79th minute, with Rafael Leao. The Portuguese received into the edge of the box and hit into the right corner to put the visitors back into the game.
The equalizer came already at the injury time. At 90+4, Vicari ended up sending the ball into the back of his own net while trying to clear Alexis Saelemaekers’s cross. And so the scoring was 2-2.
The draw was not good for any of them. SPAL reached 19 points, but remain in 19th place and with big chances of relegation. Meanwhile, AC Milan lost the chance to get closer to Napoli, being now with 43 points, in 7th place.
