This Thursday the Stadio Olimpico di Roma was the stage for the match between Roma and Gent, for the round of 32 of UEFA Europa League. The visitors dominated basically the whole game, however, it was the hosts who got the victory. Carlos Perez scored the only goal of the game.
The first good chance of the match was already the goal. At the 13th minute, after a rebound, the ball was left for Perez, who finished in the corner, past goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.
Despite scoring the early goal, the Roman team couldn’t impose themselves. Being behind on the scoring, Gent woke up and started to press, bringing a lot of danger to Pau Lopez’s goal.
And the pressure continued in the second half. Roma closed themselves and decided to use counter-attacks, but they were not really effective. Gent, on the other hand, obligated Lopez to make good saves. The game ended 1-0 just because the visitors’ strikers were lacking aim.
Even though they won, I wouldn’t say it was a good result for the Italian team. They were playing at home and a skinny victory like that isn’t the best you can do. Now, they will travel to Belgium with a small advantage. The Buffalos will play in front of their fans, which will probably give them more strength. If they already made it difficult in Italy, just picture it at home. Let’s wait until next Thursday to see what will happen.
Before that, both teams will focus once again on their national leagues. Roma will welcome Lecce, on Sunday, for Serie A. The Yellow and Red side are in the 5th position on the table, 6 points away from the 4th place. On the same day, Gent will welcome Sint-Truiden for the Belgium Championship. They are currently in second place, almost 10 points behind the first.
