Penarol and Danubio faced each other this Saturday at the Campeon del Siglo in the 3rd matchday in the Uruguayan Apertura tournament. The match ended up in a 1-1 draw, with Cristian Rodriguez opening the scoring for hosts Penarol, from the penalty spot, and Nequecaur leveling it up for the visitors in the injury time.

The game started off, but those who were waiting for a good game surely got a bit frustrated. It was a very defensive game from both sides in the first half, and real chances were scarce.

Martinez and Xisco forced Denis to make good saves in the first moments, but they stopped at the keeper. Moments later, Diego Forlan’s men took control of the match, but couldn’t score, as we went half-time at nil.

After the break, Forlan introduced two players who helped Penarol to open the scoring. The Uruguayan legend subbed in Rodriguez and Dennis Olivera for Xisco and Pellistri. Apparently, the fans at the Campeon del Siglo approved Forlan’s changes, as both sacked players were booed.

With 10 minutes to go, the referee awarded Penarol a penalty after Nequecaur touched the ball with his hand inside the area. Therefore, Rodriguez was the one who collected and opened the scoring, making the Stadium pulse. 1-0 Penarol.

However, when everything looked like the win was going to stay with Forlan’s men, the visitors surprised and reached the equalizer. It was the same Nequecaur, who handballed the ball inside the box, thus he was having a bad display, who scored Danubio’s first goal in the League. On 90+1, he climbed higher to head home and level things up for the visitors. 1-1.

The draw was not really what Penarol fans were expecting, as Danubio didn’t win nor had scored yet in the competition. Also, it’s the second match of the Uruguay giants without a win, as they lost the previous match.

With this, Penarol reached four points in three matches. On the other hand, Danubio continues without winning after three games and is in the penultimate position with only one goal scored.

Garcia’s team returns to the field next Saturday against the Uruguayan River Plate, at home. Then, Penarol will play the biggest Uruguayan derby against Nacional.
