This Tuesday, the clash between Santos and Delfin ended with the hosts’ victory at Vila Belmiro, for matchday 2 of Group G in the Copa Libertadores Group Stages. Behind closed doors, the club who launched Pele and Neymar to the world did not play a good game but managed to beat the Ecuadorian side. The goal was scored by Lucas Verissimo.
Santos were clearly anxious during the beginning of the match and found it difficult to break through Delfin’s defensive system. The first chance of the match happened at the 15th minute when striker Eduardo Sasha risked from distance, but the ball went wide. After that, the home side started to create more and lost a few chances. The visitors took some time to balance the match, however, when they did, Santos scored their only goal.
At the 30th minute, Carlos Sanchez crossed to the box and Verissimo climbed higher than the defense and the goalkeeper to head it home.
The hosts still had some chances to double the scoring, in which goalkeeper Baroja made beautiful saves to prevent other goals during the first 45 minutes.
The second half, however, was different from the first. The technical quality dropped significantly, but we saw Delfin launch themselves on the attack. However, they didn’t bring danger to Everson’s goal not even once. Even though they tried to equalize things, it was not enough and the match ended with the victory from the home side, even without fans.
With the result, Santos won their second match in the competition and are in 1st place on Group G, with 6 points. Delfin is the 3rd, with 1 point after the draw in the first match.
As Libertadores had been suspended as many competitions around the world, both teams will now wait for their next continental match. Santos will still play on Saturday, against Sao Paulo, for the Sao Paulo Championship. Delfin would play against El Nacional for the Ecuadorian League, but the match was postponed.
