Behind closed doors, LASK and Manchester United faced each other for the round of 16 of the Europa League. The Red Devils thrashed the home team with an amazing 5-0 victory and basically guaranteed their place on the quarter-finals. The goals were scored by Odion Ighalo, Daniel James, Juan Mata, Mason Greenwood, and Andreas Pereira.
The English side was the favorite to win the clash and they started showing that they wanted the victory, pushing forward and leaving the hosts with the counterattacks. Even playing like that, it took time until the visitors finally broke the deadlock. At the 28th minute, Ighalo received a pass from Bruno Fernandes, controlled the ball and hit at the right corner to open the scoring.
After that, the match was more balanced, with LASK improving in the final minutes of the first half and almost equalizing. The second half started as the first one ended, with the hosts launching themselves on the attack. However, little by little, the Red Devils went back to the game and doubled their lead. At the 58th minute, James received in the middle and finished in the right corner, past the goalkeeper.
With 80 minutes on the clock, the match was still 2-0 and nobody would believe that more 3 goals would be scored, but Man United did it. At the 82nd minute, they scored their third with the Spanish Juan Mata. And at the injury time, two more goals. At 90+1 Greenwood shot on the far post, past the goalkeeper, and 2 minutes later Andreas Pareira shot from distance, making it five.
With the triumph, Manchester United have a great advantage for the second leg game, which will be played in England. They can lose by 4-0 and nothing would change. However, the next match still doesn’t have a confirmed date due to uncertainties around the chaos that the European continent is passing through.
