Lucas Moura puts Tottenham into the Champions League Final

After what happened yesterday, when Liverpool reversed a 3-0 deficit into an epic 4-0 win at Anfield against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, no one really thought that this could happen again in only one-day time. But guess what? It happened again. And it came from a very unexpected side. Who would have thought? Who would have said? Tottenham Hotspurs in the UEFA Champions League Final. How did it happen?

Well, simple…

They struggled at their brand new stadium against the very good youth side of Ajax. In my opinion, Ajax and Liverpool would make it to the Final. I have even written an article about it, and you can check it out here. As I was saying, the Spurs lost 1-0 to Ajax last week. Ajax were extremely superior. It was really the most enchanting team in Europe at this time. The Dutch side seemed to be inspired by the old times when the legendary Johan Cruyff used to deliver a glance of his magic in Amsterdam.

Hakim Ziyech, Dusan Tadic, David Neres, Mathjiis De Ligt, Andre Onana, Nicolas Tagliafico, Lasse Schone, and mainly, the responsible for everything. The manager Erik Ten Hag. What a team, really. They knocked out Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus, and almost did the same to Tottenham. It’s sad that many – if not everyone I mentioned – will leave Ajax in the next season due to the high-level of Football they displayed.

About the Match

The Spurs started in the worst way possible. In a corner from the left, Schone found De Ligt, who arouse higher than anyone, and headed home past Hugo Lloris. 1-0 Ajax. Furthermore, on 35 minutes, Tadic robbed the ball in the middle, combined a give-and-go with Dolberg, and fed Ziyech, who found the back of the net of Lloris in a pretty finish.

Then, Mauricio Pochettino decided to introduce Fernando Llorente into the team. The Argentine manager couldn’t be more accurate, as the Spaniard striker gave more mobility and freedom for Lucas to attack in behind him. At 55, the Spurs pulled a goal back. Danny Rose played with Dele Alli, who played it in the feet of Lucas, as the Brazilian beat Onana for the first time in the match. 2-1 Ajax.

Four minutes later, after a cross, Llorente almost scored, but Onana made almost a miraculous save. However, the goalkeeper was poor to clear it, as Lucas got the rebound. The Brazilian showed great footwork skills to round half defense of Ajax in a short space and fired home past Onana. 2-2.

The ‘almost impossible’ got closer once again.

One goal. It was it separated the Spurs from their 1st UCL Final ever. Onana was giant. Saving impossible balls, and Ziyech always a danger on counters. The Marocco International even hit the post.

The referee gave five minutes of stoppage time. At the 95, when the Ajax supporters were already celebrating, and maybe even booking flights to Madrid, Lucas Moura stepped up once again. The Brazilian capitalized on a loose ball and slotted home from the edge of the box. Wow.

Every Spurs player celebrating with the Brazilian, Pochettino crying on the pitch, and even the injured Harry Kane showed up. While the Ajax players were all down to the ground. It was indeed really hard to believe what we just witnessed.

Lucky Spurs? Maybe… Unlucky Ajax? Probably…

One thing is for sure. Both teams have acquired the respect from all the world. They were always against all odds. Ajax were always the underdogs versus both Real and Juve. Tottenham also. Struggled to make it to the Knockout Stages. Eliminated Dortmund, and Man City, in a great match. Both of you are already winners. See you in Madrid, Spurs!

He’s done it again!

Nothing like a hat-trick after another. The worst season of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League in 13 years has had a turnaround. The Portuguese stepped up at the Juventus Stadium with only one goal in the entire tournament. And he left with one more of his magical nights. The Old Lady’s number 7 scored all of the three goals in a 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in Turin and secured the Italian team’s place in the last 16 of the competition. A quick reminder is that Atletico had won the first leg in Spain for 2-0.

La Juve finished the first half with 62% possession and six more attempts than Atlético. They were absolutely dominant throughout the whole game. From start to finish. The first goal started with Spinazzola robbing the ball on the left and Bernardeschi’s good move. The Italian talent pulled out a good cross, who had a target spotted. Guess who it was? Yeah… The Goat… Mr. Champions opened the scoring in a header, even being heavily marked by Atletico’s defense. 1-0 Juventus.

It was only three minutes of the second half for Cristiano Ronaldo to give indications that he would have one of the best nights of his career. And again with one of its main weapons: the thrust. This time, he took advantage of a right cross, headed well, but Jan Oblak made a great save. But the technology of the goal line helped Juve and validated the second goal of CR7. The third would come in the 85th minute, in a penalty shootout suffered by Bernardeschi. To the team of Diego Simeone, the frustration remained. Atletico ended the match without hitting Szczesny’s goal. And he bid farewell to the European dream again.

There are so many data to highlight the greatness of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League that it is difficult to know where to start … come on:

– Cristiano has reached 124 goals in 160 games. He is the highest scorer of the tournament

– Cristiano has reached 63 goals in the knockout phase in the Champions League. He is the leader in the matter

– Cristiano Ronaldo reaches the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the ninth consecutive time

– Cristiano Ronaldo scored his eighth hat-trick in the Champions League. Equated Messi in statistics

Juventus joins Ajax, Manchester United, Tottenham, Porto, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Barcelona among the qualifiers to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

For the fifth time in the last six years, Atletico is eliminated from the Champions League with Cristiano Ronaldo as their rival. In 2013/14 and 2015/16, Diego Simeone’s team fell to Real Madrid in the decision. In 2014/15, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In 2016/17, he left in the semifinal. And now, he’s on his way in the round of 16. In all, the Portuguese has scored seven goals in eight confrontations for the tournament against the rival. There’s only one question… Who is better? Messi or Ronaldo? Both are great, honestly…

Lyon wins the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the 4th time in a row

This Saturday (18th of May) was an important day for Women’s Football. It was the final of the Women’s UEFA Champions League. The match took place in Budapest… And what an incredible match.

Barcelona, for the first time in history going to the final, was going to face the powerful Lyon. The French club were the current champions and wanted to lift the trophy again. And they got it. After an amazing first half, the girls of Lyon were once again champions after a 4-1 victory.

The match began with a good chance for Barcelona, but soon things changed sides. At the 5th he amazing Van de Sanden – who played her best football – planted a low cross into the box. It was up to the Budapest-born Marozsan tap in an easy finish to the goal. Almost 10 minutes later Van der Sanden has been again released down the right. This time she passed it to Ada Hegerberg. The Norwegian scored her first goal this afternoon, sending the ball pass Sandra Paños.

Things continued hot on the first half and at the 19th minute, Hegerberg appeared once again to put the ball on the net and make the 3-0. With that, things were pretty difficult to Barcelona, once their best player, Lieke Martens, was not on a good day. And to make things worse to the Spaniards at the 30th minute Hegerberg scored her hattrick, showing why she is the best player in the world. This time it was Bronze who delivered and it was the first goal in which the Norwegian had to score under pressure.

Guardiola denies taking on Juve next season

Pep Guardiola denied in all letters that he plans to leave Manchester City next season. After Massimiliano Allegri’s departure from Juventus, the Spanish coach was a supposed substitute. He was questioned on Friday about a possibility of a change for the Old Lady. And the answer was narrow. As far as he is concerned, he stays in England until the end of the contract, in 2021.

Angry with the same question over and over again, Guardiola was straight on the interview. “I don’t plan on going to Juventus. I will continue in Manchester for more two years if that is also the will of City.” he started. “Next season I’ll be training Manchester City”, he completed saying.

The statement was on the eve of the last match of the English Champion of the season. This Saturday, Manchester City faces Watford for the FA Cup decision. But behind-the-scenes matters dominated the day before the ruling. The contracting (or not) of Griezmann, for example, entered in agenda.

On that matter, the Spanish coach said that Barcelona did not need to worry, because Manchester City don’t intend on buying Antoine Griezmann. According to him, the team doesn’t have the money to do so. And honestly, Griezmann wouldn’t be really necessary to the Citizens, once the midfield is still very good.

With the title of the Premier League and the English League, the blue side of Manchester faced Watford this Saturday (18th of May) for the FA Cup final and guaranteed the third trophy this season after an amazing victory by 6-0 with goals of David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus. Sterling scored a hat-trick and showed he is an important player for the Citizens. With this, Manchester City finished the season with all possible titles inside England, but no titles on Europe. They will come back to the pitch on the 17th of July, for the semi-final of the Asia Trophy, against West Ham.
