On Wednesday Real Madrid welcomed Manchester City at Santiago Bernabeu stadium and, surprisingly, ended up defeated. Despite the technical advantage of the rival, the team was favorite to the game for playing at home. However, without their main star Eden Hazard, they ended up not being able to neutralize Pep Guardiola’s City, losing by 2-1. Isco scored for the hosts, while Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne gave the victory to the English club.

During the first half, Madrid were fortunate not to be a goal behind, once City had grown into the game as time passed by. The home side had almost no chances and they looked short of ideas, while the visitors were doing a great job at limiting their chances even more.

The second half started just like the first one ended, however, it was Real Madrid who broke the deadlock, at the 60th minute. After Vinicius Junior intercepted Walker’s attempt to clear the ball, Isco received it alone inside the box and sent it past the goalkeeper.

The English club showed cold blood and continued playing their game. It took them 18 minutes to equalize things up. At the 78th minute, Jesus got behind Ramos to flick in De Bruyne’s cross with his head. The 1-1 would already be good because of the away goal. But Man City kept on pushing forward.

At the 82nd minute, Sterling invaded the Spanish area and was eventually brought down by Carvajal. The referee had no doubts and pointed to the penalty spot. De Bruyne stepped up and did not waste, making it 2-1 for City.

Before the end of the match, Madrid still lost their captain. Sergio Ramos saw a straight red card for a foul on Jesus and made things even more difficult for the Merengues on their second leg match.

Historic win for Man City. They were just the third English side to beat Real Madrid in their own domains. The two other ones were Arsenal, back in 2004, and Liverpool, back in 2009. Also, it was the first official win from the Cityzens over Madrid. I guess all the effort Pep Guardiola has put in for this game paid off, right?

With the result, Manchester City is in advantage for the second leg that takes place next March 17. In addition to the advantage on the scoreboard, the team will also have their fans in their favor, since they will play at home, at the Etihad. With that, Pep Guardiola’s men will try to avoid the fifth elimination of English teams to Real Madrid in the tournament’s knockout clashes.
