Frankfurt and Basel faced each other for the Europa League round of 16 in Germany, behind closed doors. The Swiss team was certainly the brighter side and got a good 3-0 victory in German territory. The goals of the visitors were scored by Samuele Campo, Kevin Bua, and Fabian Frei.
The beginning of the first half was sleepy and basically, until half-time, not many chances were created. The best one was the first goal of the match. At the 27th minute, with a magnificent free-kick, Samuele Campo opened the scoring for the visitors, giving the advantage to the Swiss side.
After that, Frankfurt were able to have the ball, but they lack objectivity. The visitors, on the other hand, focused on counter-attacks, but none with success. So the scoring didn’t change until the break.
The second half started with the hosts looking for the equalizer. They increased their intensity but wasted time to actually finish. Their best opportunities were from crosses from the edge of the field. Basel, on the other hand, found the space to attack and wrapped the game up. At the 73rd minute, they doubled their advantage, when Campo found Bua, who rolled past the goalkeeper.
At two down at home, the German side had to go forward and try to at least score one, but once again they left too many spaces in the defense and the third goal from the visitors came. At the 85th minute, Frei got a cross from the left and hit to the back of the net.
With this, the Swiss side opened a great advantage for the second leg game, which will be played in Switzerland. Things became pretty difficult for Frankfurt and if they want to continue on the competition, they’ll have to make the game of their lives.
Until the next match, that it’s yet to be confirmed, both teams will rest, once both the Swiss Championship and the German Bundesliga had been suspended.
