Amid the coronavirus chaos around the world and even with postponed matches in the UEFA Europa League, the match between Basaksehir and Copenhagen in Turkey happened normally. The round of 16’s game of the Europa League ended with the triumph of the home team by 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by Edin Visca, from a penalty.
Despite playing away from home, Copenhagen had more possession, but they were not really threatening. The hosts reached the attacking field more often and goalkeeper Johnsson had to make two good saves. He also had luck when one of Visca’s shots deflected off his teammate, Crivelli, and hit the post. Even with all the chances created by the home side, the scoring remained without goals until half-time.
As soon as the second half began, Crivelli was injured, giving place to Robinho. The Brazilian helped Basaksehir to create more chances and even a clear opportunity to score, in which Demba Ba – yes, that one from the Gerrard slip – bizarrely wasted. When everybody thought the match would end up on a draw, the referee awarded a penalty for the hosts. At the 88th minute, Visca stepped up and converted from the spot.
With the result, the team from Istanbul has the advantage for the second leg, which will be played in Denmark. Initially, the match was scheduled for March 19, but currently, all the UEFA competitions had been suspended. We will have to wait to see when, and maybe even if, the next game will be played.
Before that, Basaksehir will play the Turkish Super League, on next Sunday. It will be an important match, a direct confront for the 1st place of the league against Trabzonspor. Copenhagen, on the other hand, with the national league suspended like many others in Europe, will take some time off until they can play again.
